How to track solar PPA performance guarantees

A step-by-step method to define, measure and evidence solar performance guarantees each month, and act before a guarantee is missed.

Monthly bars against a dashed pink guarantee line, with check dots under each month and one grey month

A performance guarantee is only worth something if you can show, month by month, whether it is being met. Many portfolios find out at year-end, when a guarantee has already been missed and the evidence is spread across vendor portals, emails and site visit notes. Here is a step-by-step way to track guarantees across a commercial and industrial (C&I) solar portfolio.

Step 1: Write the guarantee into the contract terms precisely

Get these details out of the PDF and into a structured record for each site:

  • The KPI (performance ratio, availability or energy yield).
  • The threshold, for example 98% availability.
  • The period: monthly, quarterly or yearly.
  • Exclusions: grid outages, curtailment, force majeure, customer-caused downtime.
  • The consequence: penalty, bonus or compensation formula.

If the exclusions aren't written down, every missed month turns into an argument.

Step 2: Pick the KPI method and use it everywhere

  • Performance ratio (PR): use IEC 61724, the usual reference. Decide where irradiance comes from (an on-site sensor or satellite data) and use the same source for the whole period.
  • Availability: decide between time-based availability (hours the plant could run) and energy-based availability (energy lost while it couldn't). They give different results, so the contract should name one.

Step 3: Normalise across brands

Each inverter portal calculates PR and availability its own way. If you take the vendor's number, a Huawei site and an SMA site are measured with different rulers. Calculate KPIs on one platform with one method for every brand, so sites are compared on equal terms.

Step 4: Track monthly, even when the guarantee is yearly

A yearly guarantee is missed one month at a time. Track the KPI every month against the share of the yearly target you need by then. A site at 97.6% in May, against a 98% yearly guarantee, still has time to recover. In November, it may not.

Step 5: Collect evidence as you go

For every month below target, keep:

  • The KPI calculation and the data behind it.
  • Excluded periods, with the reason (grid outage, curtailment) and the source.
  • Related tickets and O&M response times.

Evidence collected at the time is much stronger than evidence rebuilt a year later.

Step 6: Act before the guarantee is missed

Set alerts on the trend, not only on the final number. When a site is heading toward the threshold, raise a ticket, rank it by what is at stake, and check that the O&M contractor responds within the contract's response times.

Where Ray helps

Ray tracks contract terms across the portfolio every day. When a site drifts toward its guarantee, he raises it with the impact attached. When a claim is due, he drafts it with the evidence: the KPI calculation, excluded periods and related tickets. A person reviews it before anything is sent.
